How to tell the difference between carpenter ants and termites?

Carpenter ants and termites are both insects that can cause damage to wood in buildings. However, there are several key differences between the two.

Carpenter ants are larger than termites and are typically black or red in color. They are also more active during the day, whereas termites are most active at night.

Carpenter ants do not eat wood, but instead create tunnels and galleries inside wood to nest in. They will often remove small pieces of wood from the tunnel as they create it, which can create a sawdust-like material called frass. Termites, on the other hand, do eat wood and can cause significant damage to the structure of a building.

Another key difference is that carpenter ants do not have a digestive system that allows them to break down wood, so they must feed on other sources of food, such as insects, honey, and plant sap. Termites, on the other hand, have a specialized digestive system that allows them to break down wood, which is their primary source of food.

Overall, the main differences between carpenter ants and termites are their size, behavior, and diet. If you suspect you have an infestation of either of these insects, please make sure to contact Bugsology at 732-627-2847 or email us at hello@bugsology.com
